Team NAIST-RITS-Panasonic has been selected to participate in the international robotics contest “Future Convenience Store Challenge 2019" at the World Robot Challenge 2020 Trials to be held in Tokyo Big Sight from December 19 to 21. The 2019 edition precedes a much larger event also organized by the Japanese Government (NEDO and METI): the World Robot Summit 2020.

In the Future Convenience Store Challenge 2019, 10 teams from universities around the world and numerous global companies will be judged on the performance of their cutting-edge robot hardware and software in the tasks of restock and disposal, customer interaction, and even toilet cleaning.

The contest consists of robots outfitted with various technologies such as object recognition, grasp planning, compliant manipulation, motion planning, task planning, navigation, human-robot interaction and error detection/correction.

The teams' performance will be scored based on the number of products each robot successfully manipulates, the final state of the cleaning, and how friendly and innovative the human-robot interaction is, all within a tight time frame.

With members from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Ritsumeikan University, and the Robotics HUB of Panasonic Corporation, we have a solid team to contend for the first place, and as defending champions on the Customer Interaction task (World Robot Challenge 2018) we are very excited to show our latest technologies at the World Robot Challenge 2019!

We wish the best luck to all teams and we hope we all have an excellent performance using our skills, research results and competitive spirit!
